Electronic tolls in Portugal (SCUT)
Starting from 2010, several motorways (including A22 in the Algarve) in Portugal were equipped with electronic unmanned toll system (SCUT).
When rental car has equipped with a toll transponder device, upon car collection you'll be asked for 20 - 30 euro deposit for the transponder. This usualy includes 15 - 25 euro of pre-loaded credit and enables clients to use the toll road without having to visit local pay stations. An option to add more credit (by a minimum of 10 euro and multiples hereof) to the transponder is available upon collection or during the rental. Remaining unused toll credit can unfortunately not be refunded.
If you refuse to pay any credit for the transponder, your rental will run under responsability for administrative and fine (if such occurs) charges on top of toll payment.
Automatic toll charges have 2-4 days delay after every passage, making impossible to count final charge on time. For this reason upon collection of rental car credit card slip will be made and kept for 5 days after car return to secure toll charges occured during last rental days.
If rental car has not equipped with transponder it is a client´s responsability to pay all charges when using motorways with E-toll system. Usually such payment can be made during the period between 2 and 7 working days after every passage on E-toll road in all Portugese Post offices(Correio), Via Verde offices and through PayShop agents.
